Do you brush daily !!! but still struggle to keep your gums healthy ? This post is for you.
Dental biofilm also known as Plaque is a polymicrobial entity that resides on surfaces of the oral cavity (mostly teeth). The supra and subgingival (above or below Gums) dental plaque biofilms can form on the tooth or implant surface.
Even though you clean your teeth twice daily, some areas are not accessible. Those areas harbour plaque. Plaque can deteriorate the periodontal and peri-implant health.

Nowadays, an alternative novel approach is being practised for removing the biofilm by visualising it with a disclosing agent and subsequently removing it with specialised air abrasive powder. Lastly, it is followed by the removal of supra and subgingival calculus using specialised instruments. This concept has been named guided biofilm therapy (GBT) .
Steps in GBT
Apply disclosing agent

Disclosing agents are used to stain these plaque pink so that patients can see them.
Motivate patient and raise awareness
We show the areas where plaque is often missed during brushing, we also take photographs so that patient can put more efforts in those areas while brushing.
Removal of biofilm by Air polisher

We use air polisher to remove those stained areas. Air polisher is a contactless method of removing biofilm.
Use of ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus

Calculus needs to be removed by Ultrasonic scaler which cannot be removed by Air polisher.
